I haven't been able to make it through everything I wanted to but I'm going to give it this week and we will probably return after a break to explore some other material. I'd like to explore some Habenstock-Ramati, Cage, Brown, Wolf, Feldman, Wolpe, Young, and others in a future show, so stay tuned for that.

Tonight though, will be slightly more up to date pieces. Starting of with Amazing Grace arranged by Ben Johnston, and then a return to the concert give by the Imbroglio String Quartet featuring the works of Thomfaricraw (myself and two other Austin based composers, Brent Fariss, and Clark Crawford), followed by a piece for computer and string quartet by Claire M Singer. And much more. Hope you enjoy, and stay tuned for some interesting shows over the next few weeks as I have some guest curators bringing in their own selections!

Bill

Ben Johnston, Amazing Grace, Kronos Quartet, White Man Sleeps

Untitled Improvisation, Imbroglio String Quartet, Austin New Music Co0p, www.newmusiccoop.org

Claire M Singer, 4:8:1 (String Quartet and Laptop Performer), Unreleased, http://www.myspace.com/clairemsinger

Clark Crawford, http://www.cadaocao.com/, String Quartet #2, Imbroglio String Quartet, Austin New Music Co0p, www.newmusiccoop.org

Brent Fariss, http://www.spectralhouse.com/, Quiet Fugal States (excerpt), Imbroglio String Quartet, Austin New Music Co0p, www.newmusiccoop.org

Bill Thompson, String Quartet no. 1, www.billthompson.org, Imbroglio String Quartet, Austin New Music Co0p, www.newmusiccoop.org

Bill Thompson, Tapu'at (excerpt), www.billthompson.org, unreleased

June 1st, a listen again...

Hi all,

I'm sure you noticed if you tuned in that June 1'st show was a prerecord. Early on in my composing career, I went through a massive string quartet fetish phase where I sought out every string quartet that I could find that was worth listening to. I listened to Beethoven's, Bartok's, Shostakovitch's, Schoenberg's, Webern's, Bergs (Lyric Suite anyway), then came across the New York School's work (OK, that's a bit of a lie as I actually started with them and worked backwards and sideways, but more on that later)....of course I discovered Scelsi, Xenakis, Penderecki, Estrada, Pape, Saariaho, and others too. Oh, and let's not forget Ives, Cowell, Carter, Crawford-Seeger, and all the other Yanks as well!

So, we will be listening to many (not all, just not that many weeks in a year I'm afraid) of these over the next few weeks. If you're into string quartets, May and June are your months on the Fog!

1. John Zorn, Forbidden Fruit, on Kronos: Winter Was Hard.
2. Earle Brown, String Quartet No. 1., on Earle Brown DVD: Chamber Works
3. Kaija Saariaho, Nymphea: Jardin Sectret III, on Arditti String Quartet from Scandinavia
4. Shameful I know, but it's done at last and now we can get on with the program.

If you haven't checked out the program, The Fog is a two hour weekly radio show dedicated to experimental music that airs on Sunday nights from 10pm to midnight (UK time) on 99.8FM. Not in Aberdeen? No problem, you can also catch the show via webcast here: www.shmu.org.uk/shmufm.m3u

It's presented by myself, Bill Thompson (I often play under the name Professor Lofi) and you can check out more about me on my site: www.billthompson.org. The show also regularly features visiting and local guests.

So, check here for playlists after each program (I rarely know in advance what will be played) and feel free to post your comments, positive or constructive, or any requests and I'll do my best to get back to you.

I'll also do my best to post links to 'listen agains' for each week as my schedule allows. Please be patient as this is a bit time consuming, but I'll do my best.

So there you have it, a blog for the Fog. Thanks for tuning in, and I'll catch this Sunday,

Bill
